  • The Launching of Artificial Intelligence in Court Sentencing (AiCOS) and Video Conferencing System of Sabah and Sarawak Courts (V-COSS) (31 October 2022)

The courts in Sabah and Sarawak are continuing their efforts to digitize court processes and justice delivery system and today marks another milestone in that journey through the launch of an expansion of artificial intelligence in court sentencing called AiCOS, applicable to section 380 of the Penal Code (theft in dwelling house) and the launch of V-COSS, the enhanced and dedicated video conferencing system for court hearings.

The AI pilot project launched in January 2020 for section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 has proven to be successful in reducing disparity between Magistrates' Courts in both states.

V-COSS and AiCOS are two of the new features, approved and funded by the Federal Government in 2020, under the E-Kehakiman Sabah and Sarawak (eKSS) project. This project will be developed and implemented over a three-year period beginning August 2020. It is anticipated that AiCOS for section 380 of the Penal Code will be fully deployed and operational in the courts in Sabah and Sarawak by the first quarter of 2023.

V-COSS has been fully operational since September 2021 where more advanced hardware and software have been installed at ten (10) courts and prisons located in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang, Kota Kinabalu, Labuan, Sandakan and Tawau. The system is used for hearings in civil cases as well as criminal cases involving the accused or prisoners appearing online from the prisons.
